Lake County, Michigan Begins e-Recording
press release

Electronic recording (e-recording) in Lake County, Mich., is now available through Simplifile, the nation’s largest e-recording service, providing faster, more cost-effective recording of land documents.

"In an effort to enhance our partnership with the public and those who use our services, and pursuant to Michigan Public Act 123 of 2010, Lake County has initiated electronic recording," said Lake County Clerk and Register of Deeds Shelly Myers. "It saves money on office supplies, storage space, and postage. It’s faster and more convenient for us and for those who use the services, which benefits the end user, including homebuyers, who are our constituents."

With e-recording available, title companies, banks, attorneys, and other document submitters will be able to electronically prepare, scan, or upload and submit documents to Lake County for recording through Simplifile’s secure, web-based service.

"My goal is to convert everyone over to using only this system," Myers said.

Instead of having to send documents such as land records to and from the county by mail, the recording process with e-recording is reduced to minutes and allows recording fees and payments to also be securely processed electronically.

"Because we are a rural community, sometimes travel is only on the weekends, for those that come to ‘visit’ their property, and if they have documents that need recording, this will handle everyone’s needs," Myers added. "Progress in a rural community means everyone wins."

Increased document security, fewer payment errors, and less overall paper waste are also some of the added benefits of e-recording.

"We’re excited to be working with Lake County and providing customers with an easy, cost-effective recording solution online," said Paul Clifford, president of Simplifile.

High-speed Internet access, a PC, and a scanner are the minimum requirements for customers to begin e-recording with Simplifile.

Lake County joins 27 other Michigan e-recording counties that have adopted Simplifile’s service, joining more than 1,185 recording jurisdictions nationwide that also e-record with Simplifile.
