First South Dakota County Begins eRecording
press release

Simplifile, a leading provider of real estate document collaboration and recording technologies for lenders, settlement agents, and counties, announced the first e-recorded document in the state of South Dakota in Gregory County.

The inaugural document recording, an electronic deed transfer, took place at the Gregory County Register of Deeds office with Gregory County Title Company as the pilot submitter.

“Recording the document through Simplifile and Gregory County was easy. I am sure this is the future for real estate transfers, mortgages, and all other types of real estate documents,” said Gregory County Title Company President Jack Gunvordahl. “E-recording will speed up document recording and help expedite the entire process.”

Gregory County was the first county in the state to start e-recording after the recent decision by the South Dakota State Legislature authorizing local register of deeds offices to accept electronically submitted documents.

“I became interested in e-recording a couple of years ago, when the concept was first being discussed at a county workshop. It looked to me like it would benefit our clients immensely, by cutting down the turnaround time immensely,” said Gregory County Register of Deeds Jerry Peterson.

“When October 17 came along, the first day we were allowed to e-record, I had already been set up and tested for errors, so I was ready to go. Luckily, our local abstractor Jack Gunvordahl assisted by allowing our office to use his document as the first document e-recorded in South Dakota.”

According to Peterson, Gregory County is accepting all document types for e-recording through Simplifile.

“I want to thank Melanie Gornick from Simplifile for encouraging us to get on board. This shows how user friendly small counties can be in helping our clients,” Peterson added.

With the addition of South Dakota, 46 states have now opened their doors to e-recording with Simplifile.

“We’re privileged to have been a part of this big moment for Gregory County and to see them be the first in the state to officially kick-off e-recording,” said Paul Clifford, president of Simplifile. “We’re excited for our recording customers and counties to have the chance to e-record and experience the time- and cost-saving benefits that come with it.”

Simplifile expects to add several more South Dakota counties to its e-recording network, the nation’s largest, within the next 60 days.

Simplifile’s e-recording service allows settlement agents to scan and electronically submit property records and associated recording fees directly to the county, making the recording process faster and more secure while reducing payment errors and eliminating check-writing expenses. County recorders can review, stamp, record, and return documents in just minutes.
