If memory serves me, in 1968, the Democrats were in control of the administration.  It was 1968 that LBJ declined to run for President again.  It was also the "protesters" in Chicago that killed any chance for HHH.  As I said in a previous post, it is 1968 all over again.

Let's not also forget it was the Republicans who pushed the Democrats to sign the Civil Rights Bills in 1964 and 1965, including LBJ.  It amazes me how revisioinist history, if it is repeated often enough, becomes the talking point.
