Does anyone ever ask a potential client for references? I get a lot of requests for pricing - or just to do the work- from out of state vendors or companies.
My policy used to be pay in advance for work, but now more and more companies are legitimately working in Louisiana. So if it's a company I haven't heard of, I check their physical address and their state's SoS website for information. If those look legit I ask for references from satisfied abstractors. If they don't look legit, or smell a little off, I ignore the request.
My feeling is if an entity is offended about needing to provide references, I probably don't want to work with them. If someone asks for my references, I supply them.
And it'd be great, in my opinion, if others would require references from new, out of state clients, so that it would be an accepted way to do business.
