We recently received an e-mail from a client that has not used our services for years. It would seem that they are now requiring all abstractors to "complete an authorized background check for 2016 in order to remain an eligible vendor".
Just in case I don't happen to have a current background check sitting around (... not just for me, but including all employees), the e-mail goes on to state, "a background check must be obtained utilizing our provider". A background check order form is attached. Fees are not listed and vary from state to state.
The 'provider' appears to have a striking amount in common with the client requiring the background check.
So I wonder - were I to request a background check - is there a chance that they might contact me to do a background check on myself and then bill me for it before paying my invoice???
The mind boggles.
