Any person can walk in to the land records of any clerk of court to request records and in some parishes do the search yourself.   But in some parishes it is not feasible to do a significant search in house.  Jefferson Parish, for example, has kept no original documents nor COB books in house.   If you want to do a search you can use their computers in house for free. 

But why not do it at your office and avoid having to pay for parking?  There is no advantage to going in the clerk's office, but many disadvantages to doing abstracting work there.
