Real Estate Industry Responds to Insurrection Violence
press releases

The American Land Title Association(ALTA) Chief Executive Officer Diane Tomb issued the following statement regarding the violence that occurred Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol:

“The insurrection and violence we saw Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol leaves a heartbreaking stain on our country’s history. The rioters’ intolerable actions were an attack on the rule of law, our traditions and our institutions.

“Completing the peaceful transfer of power is a significant part of the democratic fabric of our country. We commend Congress for fulfilling their Constitutional duties and certifying the election following the mayhem. ALTA looks forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration and the new Congress. We will continue to support bipartisan collaboration in developing policy that provides housing opportunities for all people across America and protects the property rights of every consumer nationwide.”

National Association of Realtors® President Charlie Oppler issued the following statement in response to today's events at the United States Capitol:

"The scenes we are watching unfold as a nation are shocking and leave us in disbelief," Oppler said. "America's largest trade association stands with our democracy and our nation's centuries-old observance of peaceful protests and the peaceful transfer of power. What happened today at the U.S. Capitol was an assault on both.

"We urge for calm and fully support the U.S. Capitol Police and the National Guard to restore safety to the city of Washington, D.C," Oppler continued. "Members of Congress, their staff, Capitol Police Officers and workers at the U.S. Capitol today came under attack. These are scenes that should not stand in the United States of America and are no part of our fabric as a free, compassionate and tolerant people."

MBA President and CEO Bob Broeksmit, CMB, issued the following statement regarding the violence that occurred today at the U.S. Capitol:

"MBA condemns the vicious, lawless mob that descended on the U.S. Capitol today and wreaked havoc on our democratic process. Their actions were abhorrent and not representative of the ideals and character of America. The United States' democracy is the model for the world; those who deliberately undermine or disrespect it, or who fail to protect it, should be ashamed.

"We are calling for an immediate peaceful end to today's assault on our democracy. The world is watching, and nothing can deter us from completing this peaceful transfer of power.

"MBA looks forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration and new Congress in the weeks and months ahead."

Chuck Fowke, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a custom home builder from Tampa, Fla., issued the following statement regarding today's protests on Capitol Hill:

“The peaceful protests that turned into an assault on the U.S. Capitol today have no place in American society and only serve to undermine our democracy. We fully support the efforts of the U.S. Capitol Police, National Guard and other law enforcement agencies to move quickly to restore order, peacefully disperse the rioters, and secure the Capitol complex.

We also applaud the Congress for getting back to work this evening on behalf of the American people.”
