MBA Applauds House Financial Services Committee Advancement of the Housing for the 21st Century Act, NFIP Extension Bill
press release, Mortgage Bankers Association

MBA's President and CEO Bob Broeksmit, CMB, released the following statement after the House Financial Services Committee’s markup and advancement of the Housing for the 21st Century Act and a bill that extends authorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP):

--

“Housing affordability remains one of the most pressing challenges facing aspiring homeowners, renters, and communities. Today’s overwhelmingly bipartisan vote in the House Financial Services Committee is a significant milestone.

“MBA applauds Chairman French Hill (R-AR), Ranking Member Maxine Waters (D-CA), Housing and Insurance Subcommittee leaders Mike Flood (R-NE) and Emanual Cleaver (D-MO), and the bipartisan coalition of Committee members for advancing this housing package that reflects a shared commitment to increasing supply, improving affordability, and modernizing federal housing programs.

“This legislation advances several long-standing MBA priorities, including updates to FHA multifamily loan limits, directional improvements to rural housing programs, and stronger coordination across federal agencies. Many of these priorities align with proposals advanced by the Senate Banking Committee’s ROAD to Housing Act, underscoring a shared, bipartisan commitment in both chambers to tackling our nation’s housing challenges.

“Passing bipartisan housing legislation is a must, and a top MBA priority in 2026. We urge House and Senate leaders on both sides of the aisle to work together to reconcile differences, maintain this momentum, and deliver meaningful housing legislation for President Donald Trump to sign into law as soon as possible.

“MBA also applauds the Committee’s unanimous passage of H.R. 5577, the NFIP Extension Act of 2026, which would extend authorization of the national flood insurance program through September 30, 2026. We will push for its swift consideration and passage in both the House and Senate.”
