The Appraisal Institute, the nation’s largest professional association of real estate appraisers, today announced it has – for the first time – bestowed its residential review designation to a previously non-Designated member.
Kathy S. Kocour of Olathe, Kansas, received her AI-RRS designation in June. The AI-RRS membership designation is held by real estate appraisers who are experienced in residential appraisal review, and who have met rigorous professional requirements relating to education, testing, experience and demonstration of knowledge, understanding and ability.
Many individuals enhance their professional standing and earning potential by adding to their credentials the AI-RRS and the AI-GRS, the Appraisal Institute’s other review designation. Kocour is the first individual to receive the AI-RRS without holding a previous Appraisal Institute designation.
“Appraisal reviewers play an important role in the residential real estate market, and we applaud Kathy for her tremendous accomplishment,” said Appraisal Institute President Jim Amorin, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS.
Kocour is a review appraiser for UMB Bank in Kansas City, Missouri, where she manages private wealth appraisals. She also is a certified general appraiser, and has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Kocour is a candidate for the Appraisal Institute’s SRA designation. She has worked in the valuation profession for more than 10 years.
The Appraisal Institute began issuing the AI-RRS and AI-GRS designations in 2014. They were the first new designations offered by the organization in more than 20 years. The Appraisal Institute established a professional appraisal review designation program in response to the growing and critically important role that appraisal review plays in risk management and mitigation for many clients/users of appraisal services. The review designation program is aimed at providing professional reviewers with the knowledge and skills needed to satisfy issues related to due diligence and risk management often requested by their employers and clients.

In addition to the AI-RRS designation, the Appraisal Institute confers the MAI designation on commercial and general appraisers, the SRA designation on residential appraisers, and the AI-GRS designation on real estate appraisers who are experienced in commercial appraisal review and who meet certain standards. The Appraisal Institute also recognizes the SRPA, SREA and RM designations conferred by its predecessor organizations.
