Has anyone been audited by the IRS to see what they think of the inflation of copy costs? Since most companies separate copy costs from the fee for the order, they separate income from reimbursement. If you are creating income by inflation of copy costs, and that income is written off as 'copy costs'. I could see the potential hazards if anyone were to get audited.

I charge the county cost, and nothing more. Yes there is more time associated with printing, scanning, etc...but that is what your fee is for.

I have had the discussions with some of my clients regarding other abstractors fees, and my honesty has been noticed. They know who is padding their invoices. I may charge a little more than the next guy, but by being honest with copy costs, the total charge for the search is less.
