Expanding Medicare is what frightens so much... that is an employer paid program. I can barely afford to cover everyone in our office now; I can't possibly afford an additional premium for everyone else who needs coverage. Until they show me that how they intend to pay for it without penalizing me (remember I am already a responsible employer) - my vote is "NO" on nationalized health care.
We already have a form of nationalized health care for those who cannot afford it - the welfare program offers medical assistance to low income individuals and families. It may not be the best coverage, but it's FREE to them. So, it would seem to me that I would be subsidizing other employers who don't want to take care of their employees and providing 'better' coverage to those who do not have jobs.
The real problem that we have is that nobody cares what medical costs are because they aren't paying the bills. Nationalized health care would only make that worse. We all know what happens when the government pays for something - it costs MORE. That is why we have $100 hammers and toilet seats.
I don't have the answer... and either does anybody else... but nationalized health care is not it. However, it is an election year, so we can expect "over the moon" promises that can't be delivered.
Best,
Robert A. Franco
