That is really strange.  If they chose to leave you and go elsewhere for WHATEVER reason, there should never be an expectation of having you 'MATCH' their other vendor.

I would have said well '  maybe we can drop the price if we can give you a late and incomplete search'

I'm a little confused on one part though.  The client didn't discuss pricing prior to the search?  Did you quote them with terms?
