He was kind of an interesting character. He died in his late thirties ...shot to death in a poker game. One of the few outlaws that was reputed to have outdrawn him was John Wesley Hardin. The two went for a drink afterward, and became friends. When he was asked about Hardin, Hickock replied that he never new anyone that had to do so much self defending.
He had given up law enforcement as a career because he was losing his eye sight. If I am not mistaken he had glaucoma. He had begun a career as a professional gambler. His last game was in Deadwood. He was holding the famous dead man's hand....eights and aces.
