If you work for a company off site, you are considered independent unless you are on their payroll. I only get paid per search and per recording. I do not get a check every week no matter how much work I do. As far as job shadowing, I don't think anyone will let you do that with them because after you are trained, you are competition.
Other than abstracting, you can type title reports and binders, get payoffs. I really don't know if they will hire someone with no experience. Some of the abstractors I know (2 of them) went to work with the Clerk's office, they work in land records, scanning recorded documents. Abstractors that saw this coming have already gotten the jobs working directly for the title companies. It'g going to be dry for a least another 2 years (JMHO)
There is one thing that we will always need here, correctional officers and hopital staff. I went to my local hospitals website and you wouldn't believe the types of employment they have. My husband and son have applied for c.o.'s. As long as you haven't been convicted of a felony and know how to read and write, you are hired and they pay for your training. $34,000 a year to start.
Just some thoughts, good luck.
