Hi Helene,
Building my own home with my own two hands was a goal I set for myself many years ago. It was a labor of love that took nearly three years to complete.
I built the place one room at a time. I felt that if I tried to do all the framing at once or all the drywall I would burn myself out.

So I built each room to completion except for the carpet before going on to the next. I included some unusual features in the home like a glass elevator, a built in terrarium and an interior balcony that overlooks the living room.
Shortly after I completed the home I was approached by the media but I declined. Sometimes I'm just very private that way. At the time, I was a private investigator providing security for abused women and their children. I would bring the families here until I could transport them to court appearances or find other shelter for them. It helped a lot that I had rented the north side of the building to the city to serve as the police station. There were always police cars parked out front which, together with the commercial appearance of the building and the sign reading "Shallowater Police Station" helped to keep my clients safe. I felt at the time that media exposure might compromise their security.
I no longer do this type of work and the police station has moved into the old post office. I'm in the process of converting that part of the building into a guest apartment for when my grown children come to visit with my grandchildren.
I appreciate your interest Helene and have written a little more about my home and included some pictures if you would like to see. You can find the article
