I'm willing to guess that he was terminally ill and that they did this as some way to avoid taxes or a lien from a potential creditor. The transaction was likely redundant and didn't give them anything that wasn't already there. I've had to talk several people out of doing things like this because they weren't really accomplishing anything by doing it and actually opening up the surviving spouse to potential creditors before it was necessary.
Just find out what you can from the office that prepared the docs and the owner, if you can contact her.
