Same thing happened to me about 6 years ago. We had gotten verbals in the City of Hampton. Wrote down who I talked to, date and time and the info. 5 months later, a bill for past due taxes...about $1600.00
I have a disclaimer on my search that reads "Taxes are checked as a courtesy and are not certified in this search to be true or accurate without a statement from the treasurer. Statements not always available"
An attempt was made to make a claim on my E&O, but my e&o company rejected the claim because I had the disclaimer.
Had I of been wrong, I would have paid it...it was afterall, less than by e&o deductible.
Bad thing is around here, sometimes we can check taxes verbally and if we try for something written from the tax collector, they wont give it to us unless we are the actual property owner. And some counties wont even give us a verbal. Even just to verify amounts.
