I have had this issue come up of few times. You want to scream and go to work as a greeter at K-Mart!! $6,000 bucks for a $50.00 search is hell!
What I suggest is that you approach the "then owner of the house" with a small claims complaint. If you don't have small claims, district court. Send a copy of the tax bill, along with a copy of the motion for judgment attached, sent by certified, return receipt requested, to the "then owner". Request contact, or payment, within ten business days. Also send by regular mail. If you don't hear from the "then owner" have the complaint served. When going to court, show a complete abstract of the ownership of the property. Deed in, Deed out. Make sure to show the court, and have the "then owner" agree, that they did in fact own the house and are responsible for the taxes. You should win judgment. I'm sure you know how to collect one! If not, call me and we will talk!!
