Most of the courthouses and record rooms in which I've worked have a strict prohibition against bringing food or drinks in. A few don't even allow cellphones, laptops or backpacks. I believe this was due primarily to the influx of "oil & gasholes" we saw here in southwest PA a few years back, wherein literal armies of abstractors would land in a county, crowding out local examiners and the public. It got so bad in one jurisdiction I know of that the local recorder placed a limit of three examiners per company in the record room at any given time, and enforced strict a "library atmosphere" policy.As to "reading out loud," I don't think I've ever met an examiner who hasn't "talked to themself" at one time or another in an effort to reason out a particularly difficult legal description or chain of title.
