Per the Minnesota Department of Commerce, we do have to have the Minnesota Closer license if we, was notaries, oversee the signing of loan documents. This is an excerpt of communication I had with Jason Broberg, a senior investigator with the Minnesota Department of Commerce:

Thank you for sharing that. It is good to see that notaries, such as yourself, understand why the Department is contacting notaries about activities that may constitute real estate closing agent activities and therefore may require a license beyond the notary commission. At the end of the day, it is our hope and goal (in order to better protect Minnesota consumers) that notaries engaged in such activities will be encouraged to take the required pre-licensing education and obtain the real estate closing agent license.
