Nine times out of ten, it’s because either a clerk in the title office or the abstractor who originally pulled the doc threw out the first page (even though the county has gone to the trouble of printing “THIS PAGE IS AN OFFICIAL PART OF THIS DOCUMENT – DO NOT DISCARD” in bold block letters).
I can't tell you how many times I've run into this. Whenever I have a prior deed recital, to use your example, "Volume 2000, Page 2" which turns out to be incorrect, I automatically key in page 1 and find that this was the case.
