We have so many outages here in Maine that we had to put a generator in place.  We have a mechanical back up system that plugs into the house and keeps the office and phones going and a new digital system that you plug the electric meter into and then your generator.  Unlike the mechanical system it takes care of the entire house.  Always good to have a double back up either for an outage of an hour or days which is the normal here.
