depends what scanner you are using what your choices are, but in commercial searches we often have 15mb and larger files. also while pdi settiings have been mentioned, there has been no mention of "save as" which should be to a pdf file. many home use scanners are sold with pictures in mind and only save to jpeg or tiff files, which will always be much larger as they scan the whole page where pdf files scan only text and objects. almost all of our work is scanned to pdf files at 200 dpi black & white which gives a very legible copy and reasonable file sizes. poor quality copies will sometimes be more legible at 400 or 600 dpi scanned on grey scale. Adobe Acrobat X is a great program for working with inages, reducing file sizes, making notes on copies. we use Canon DR-2050C and DR-2080C scanners with the Canon software. these units are really trouble free and very tough, that is, they travel well.several of our units are 7 or 8 years old and require nothing but an occasional cleaning of the rollers.
