Agreed.  Unpopular speech like his is the essence of these protections.  You rarely need to defend popular speech, but unpopular speech is the type that is always called into question.  I don't like any administration, but that doesn't mean that I agree with his song's assessment of affairs either. 

I always like to remind people that "policy" of a school or any government agency does not rise to the level of law and must always be in compliance with the law in order to be valid;  otherwise, it does not and can not overcome fundamental Rights, nor civilly proscrived privileges of the People.
