I don't really have any good ideas for "getting your foot in the door," but I agree with your sentiment that the AfBAs are tremendous problem. If you aren't already familiar with them, check out the National Association of Independent Title Agents (NAILTA).
In Ohio, the Ohio Association of Independent Title Agents has been trying to tackle this issue. They currently have a lawsuit pending against the Ohio Department of Insurance, trying to force them to enforce laws in Ohio that the association believes prohibits AfBAs and Controlled Business Arrangements. In my opinion, independent agents are going to have a very tough time in this industry unless something can be done. Joining and supporting these organizations, that represent the truly independent agents, is the best way to combat AfBAs.
