That is unfortunate.  It seems that people will go to the person who gives them the advice they want to hear, whether its accurate or not.  I don't think you have much of a choice in the matter however.  First, the good adivce you give probably nets you more clients than you lose.  Thus, it probably wouldn't be wise to stop helping people like you have been.  Second, you can't exactly require a deposit for your services because if nobody else does that, you will ultimately end up losing more business than you save. Third, and this is just my opinion, it is more important to help people and give them sound advice than to lure more clients in the door. 

Sorry to hear about this situatution, though.  Believe me, I can relate.  It seems I have the same problem in my law office.
