I've done it.  Can't say that I enjoyed the process, but I couldn't keep carrying another company for months at a time when my own bills were coming due.  Fortunately I did end up getting paid for all the work, but they haven't sent me anything else since then, which actually was fine with me.  Getting a slow pay/ no pay to cough up what they owe is just like having a second job.
