I agree that spending needs to be reined in, but I disagree with the last part of your statement.  Taxation is not a zero-sum game.  Tax increases do not result in increased revenue...you just get less of whatever is being taxed.  True cuts in the rate of taxation always result in increased tax revenue.  Works every time it's been tried.  It's the same principle as when Target or Wal-Mart wants to move more product.  Do they raise their prices?  No.  They run a sale.  The store doesn't make as much on each item, but they make it up in volume.  They certainly wouldn't keep doing it if they were losing money.
