You are grasping at straws. Please cite the page of the ruling upon which you rely in the Perpich v. DOD, Supra. As I understand the decisive utterance a  governor's refusal to consent to a federal activation of the guard is a matter Congressional accommodation only...not a matter of right vested in the state governments. As cited above...Congress can  withdraw the gubernatorial veto without danger of constitutional violation. The court clearly explained the limitation placed on governors by the Montgomery Amendment. As such Governor Rell or Palin do in fact have little to say about it in the event that her state's air national guard is activated by the federal government as a first line of defense by federal government. I believe that was the issue that gave rise to this discussion. Can you even conceive of a scenario in which a state governor took it upon himself/herself to launch a wing of the state's Air National Guard against a foreign nation?

Yours and Anita's concepts of what a free society should be are absolutely frightening. It sounds more like something out of  "l984" ( I am talking about the novel...not the year)... or possibly more reminiscent of a line from "Cool Hand Luke" ..."gonna git ya mind right, boy".

We do not have thought control in this country, nor Soviet style gulags to detain political prisoners. We do not burn books which do not conform to approved government political philosophy as was the case in central Europe 1933 to 1945. We do not penalize individuals for crimes that they might commit in the future simply because our legal system requires a combination of two elements Mens Rea (criminal intent) and Actus Reus (criminal act). We do permit citizens to believe pretty much anything they like...even your rather extreme right wing concepts. If you and Anita have a problem with a teacher wrongfully influencing "young impressionable minds" join you local boards of education , and voice your opinions with the majority when a teacher fails to teach the school's curriculum.

Actually I am not a left winger...neither Republican nor Democrat..simply someone who likes to consider all the options. However, from your extreme right wing position I can understand how it appears to be left of center.

It is true that the Vienna Summit set in motion the events that resulted in the Cuban Missile Crisis. However, I think that Kennedy was masterful in his response to the potential conflict. He had advocates of a surgical air strike on the missile positions...advocates of a full invasion of Cuba ...and advocates of a diplomatic resolution...all set in the back drop of possible nuclear war. There were meetings with the responsible members of the cabinet and the joint chiefs with conflicting advice. He was successful in gaining a consensus of cabinet members which resulted in a resolution of the problem short of war.
