Out of curiosity, I thought I would check to see what the disclaimer on our home county's Web site stated. We don't really use it, they no longer provide document images. It only contains the index.
Anyway... here is what it says:
The Ohio County Recorder's Offices present the information on this web site as a service to the public. We have tried to ensure that the information contained in this electronic search system is accurate. The Recorder's Offices make no warranty or guarantee concerning the accuracy or reliability of the content at this site or at other sites to which we link. Assessing accuracy and reliability of information is the responsibility of the user. The user is advised to search on all possible spelling variations of proper names, in order to maximize search results. The Ohio County Recorder's Offices shall not be liable for errors contained herein or for any damages in connection with the use of the information contained herein. If you choose not to accept the conditions above please click HERE to exit this site.
I am particularly intrigued by: "Assessing accuracy and reliability of information is the responsibility of the user." How could anyone ever accurately assess the accuracy and reliability of their Web site??
On the other hand, they could have the same disclaimer on all of the books in the recorder's office... and the computers that have been used exclusively for the past several years. There are mistakes in the courthouses, too. Now that we have to use the computers - there are no more books - I wonder how accurate and realiable those are.
Ah well... times are changing. I miss the old book indexes. They were very reliable, they never changed (without leaving a trace), and you didn't have to search 15 different spellings (similar spellings were grouped on the same pages). It we are stuck with the computers... I certianly think that a better job could be done with them. The people who developed the software have no idea how we do title searches.
