I attended a seminar on debt collection a few years ago and one of the things I remember is,  the presenter (an Attorney) said to be very careful about sending notices that may be read by others regarding a past due or collection notification. It is a possibility that the sender could be liable according to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Anything that would show through an envelope, a fax, etc. could lead to some problems. So I am quite careful with that. I just don't need any other time wasting proceedings in my life.

I think it is deplorable that the person took it out on your staff member. I think that was definitely uncalled for and certainly unprofessional.
