Well... that is a little over $27,700 per year and tax free (if I'm not mistaken). Not to mention he has had free room and board for 18 years, too. If he had worked and lived on the "outside" for the past 18 years, do you think he would have managed to save $500,000?
Don't get me wrong... I don't think $500,000 is enough to compensate someone for 18 years of their life. But how much would be enough? I'm sure getting out prison and being handed $500,000 is still probably about the happiest day of his life, though.
