Sorry to hear about your friend. Hope he's on the way to recovery. Here are a couple of Friday night thoughts (a little beer involved) about the scoundrel who tried to steal the businsess:
If I were the customer, I would be loathe to do any business with somebody who acquired my business through a lie. A simple phone call to the customer, ratting him out, should do the trick.
Where do you guys work anyway -- Mayberry? As long as I've been in this business, it has not been considered wise to have anything identifying ones customers around the competition. Friendly or not. As Jimmy Buffett wrote, "fins to the left, fins to the right", or something like that.
As for uniting, there are a modest, but growing, number of abstractors who chose to do just that. They are running businesses, like you, and trying to make a difference in their free time. You can lament what this industry is becoming or you can get on board. The choice is yours.
