Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell today signed into law legislation that will restrict the government's power of eminent domain. Senate Bill 881 amends the state's eminent domain code by prohibiting, with some exceptions, an acquiring agency from taking private property in order to use it for private enterprise.

I applaud the Pennsylvania General Assembly and Governor Rendell for decisively dealing with this important issue. I understand that Connecticut's General Assembly adjourned last night without taking up the issue in this year's legislative session. Indiana and Georgia are among eighteen states that have passed similar legislation, and we can only hope that other states will follow suit.
