Some of the message was unclear, but from what it seemed like the issue was, I have considered one possibility.
What probably happened is that ALTA used the "CC:" function in their original message to distribute the mail to all the contacts. When this message hit your autoresponder, it sent the auto-reply to all 4000 contacts on the ALTA email. Many of these people wished to not receive the autoresponder message from you, as it does not apply to them.
To make it worse, if any of the other contacts had autoresponders, or manually replied to your message, it bounced off your autoresponder again, and keeps replying back and forth.
If this is the case, two immediate solutions would be to disable your emails autoresponder option, and ask ALTA to remove your email address from the distribution. Then you can get a handle on the problem.
With more details about who are the "them" that want to get off the list, and what emails you are receiving from ALTA, it might shed more light on the possible solution.
