Hi Stephen,

I've been saying the same thing for years. One of the reasons I gave up abstracting full-time is situations such as this. If a customer wants copies at cost, let them do their own legwork. Your metaphor about the brake pads is spot on.

During a recent service visit, it was determined that my truck needed to have front brake pads and rotors replaced.  I'm a car guy and I do possess the requisite skill set necessary to perform the task, however, I elected to have the shop do the work, which charged me $87.99 for a set of pads and $115.40 apiece for the rotors (this was in addition to their labor charge of $90 per flat rate hour).

Now, I know for a fact that my local auto parts store sells those pads for around $50 a set; rotors for my truck run about $85 apiece.  You do the math.

Anyone want to venture a guess what would happen if I told the shop manager that I’m only going to reimburse him for what ‘he’ paid for those parts?  That’s right, sports fans…he’d laugh in my face, slap a mechanic's lien on my vehicle and impound it until I settled his bill in full (which he has every right to do under Pennsylvania law).

Which leads me to two questions: 1) what is the difference between that and imposing a reasonable mark-up for something extra that the customer did, in fact, ask for? and; 2) why are abstractors still letting their customers dictate their fees?
