Because of all the postings regarding slow pays & charging extra for plat copies, I have been prompted write this.
I subcontract a great deal of my work to other abstractors, and I can tell you from my experience, abstractors can be as different as night and day -- just like clients. I have found that most clients are willing to pay you extra charges as long as you let them know what they are upfront. I have asked all the searchers that I do work with to tell me their fees and copies charges when they send back their work. Most of the searchers I work with do this, but there are many who don't. Nothing is more upsetting then having work completed, sent back to the client, invoiced on our end & then at the end of the month get a bill from the searcher, that is more then what I invoiced to my client. And sometimes the invoice from the searcher is not clear as to why it is more then the regular fee. I can tell you the searcher who lets me know up front what their fee is on each job, & then sends me an invoice with the initial fee & what the extra charges are for, gets paid FIRST. If we have to take an invoice & check every order, it is going to go to the bottom of the pile. I try to let my clients know of any extra fees, but if I don't know about them, then I lose money. I won't continue to use searchers who can't even tell me their fees. I am sure that many of our clients feel the same way. The most important thing an abstractor can do is to communicate with their client., even if the client is another abstractor.
Just my two cents
