Well, I don't think the independent abstractor will become extinct, however, it is going to be very tough to make a decent living if things don't change.  For instance, the title search standards for insurability are almost to the point, where the entire search can be done online in a lot of counties.  As more counties become computerized, it will be that much easier for the VMCs to pull automated reports and bypass the independent abstractors all together.  Some counties have already seen a huge decrease in volume of work for the independent abstractors from this new technology.

Those that are still around are going to be left with very little work and with the fees as low as they are - you won't be able to make a living.  It might provide a nice additional income to supplement your regular wage from McDonald's, or social security, though.   Independent title searching will be the new Wal-Mart greeter.

Regardless of whether you agree with this or not - there are certainly issues that all abstractors share and they could benefit from a professional association.  NALTEA is the only one that exists right now, so I am a member.  Those who choose not to join are free make that choice as well.
