Recently, in at least 3 counties in Georgia; Rockdale, Lamar & Pike, lien indices have gone missing. Someone was actually able to lift these books from the record rooms. While not surprised when someone steals a page from the index - usually one who is not an abstractor - stealing a whole book is unusual. However, it is my understanding the clerks have reasons to believe an online searcher is responsible. One clerk's office told me they had rec'd a phone call asking for a copy of the 2002 lien index. The request was denied and shortly thereafter, the index was missing. In the 3 counties, the stolen indices are those that are not available online; years vary. The thefts have caused a whole bunch of complications and the clerk's authority is very ticked off about this. Please report any suspicious behavior in the record room you are working in. I wonder if stealing indices is a new way to compose a database of liens. Anyone else see this problem?
