On 2/8/07 there was discussion on a thread concerning the release of a prison inmate wrongfully convicted of a forcible felony. DNA evidence conclusively proved that he could not have committed the crime of which he was convicted. The State of Connecticut offered him $500,000.00 in compensation. This morning's news announced that he has rejected the offer, and demanded $5,000,000.00 in compensation. He has the backing of two state representatives who are introducing legislation to secure payment of the $5,000,000.00 for him.
The news further reported that in states which have statutes permitting compensation for false imprisonment it is not unusual to compensate the released inmate at a rate of $1,000,000.00 for each year in which he was wrongfully imprisoned.
