Your story of angry abstractors working against each other reminded me of a story I heard a long time ago over a few beers with an old retired lobster fisherman. He was telling me about how they would go out each morning to check the traps by hand. If their was a lobster in the trap they plopped it into a waiting basket and dropped a tight lide over it so the angry lobster couldn't escape.
Once they found a second lobster they again plopped it into the basket but no longer needed to put the lid on.
Confused, I asked, "Why not"
He laughed and replied, "With more than one lobster in the basket, every time one almost makes it to the top, one of the others will always reach up and drag em down. They just aren't smart enough to help each other."
Then he grinned and said, "Don't ever be a lobster."
