[-] No Find Fees - carol green/OR (19 replies)

Just wanted to know if I'm the only company out there that charges a No Find fee. We had a client that ordered a current owner search from a specific county. Our abstactor drove to the county that the CLIENT requested we do the search in (which is 50 miles from our office, one way!) only to find out the property was in another county. We charged a $20.00 Incorrect County Search fee which we have always done and no problems. The owner of the company called and was very rude right off the bat, wanted me to justify how we could charge a fee. She stated our clients don't pay a fee. I explained to her our abstactor had to drive 100 miles round trip. Gas prices in our areas are $3.38-$3.45 a gallon and I have to pay the abstactor for his time and parking which is very expensive in this county. She very rudly stated well, he was there anyway. She didn't get that I STILL have to pay him. I don't expect anyone to work for free! (Does Fed Ex or anybody else for that matter waive their fee just because they were there anyway?!) I don't think so! I didn't say that to her, didn't think to at the time. She again very rudely said I should have looked at a map to see if it was in the county they gave and that should take 2 seconds. We are a very small company and I am the only one that works in the office plus I do a lot of the field work myself. If I had to check a map which would take a bit longer than 2 seconds, for every order to make sure the client gave the correct county,( we cover 10 in 2 states) I would either have to hire a part time person (which costs $$) or do it myself  which takes time away from doing their searches that they want back ASAP! She also stated we are paying you to do the search in the correct county. (They just sent it back for the correct county), however sometimes they do not, so I had no way of knowing they would when I sent them the fee and what does that have to do with it anyway. I now have to pay someone to do it in the correct county tomorrow which is another 1 1/2 hours away. But what upsets me the most is the rude way she talked down to me like I was the dirt under her shoes and it was MY FAULT that they gave us the wrong county, and how dare I charge for our services. Sorry this is so long but needed to vent. Would love to hear if anyone else charges an incorrect county search fee or if I am being unreasonable.
