Deborah: the USPS site is NOT the place to go to find out the correct county! In fact, MOST of the time we get an incorrect county (and we cover the entire state of Michigan) it is because the client has checked the usps site. The problem there is that you may have a MAILING address attached to, say, Cement City, Michigan. According to the post office, that is in Jackson County. Well, part of Cement City IS in Jackson county....but there are folks in both Lenawee and Hillsdale counties that also have a cement city mailing address, but the physical property is in Lenawee or Hillsdale, NOT Jackson.
We have had a 99% accuracy rate by checking mapquest.com if the abstractor says "no find" per county records. If mapquest says the exact address does not exist but X-city is in X-county, I then go back to the client and tell them it looks like the exact address is wrong. If mapquest says "yes, there is such an address," zoom in on the map until you see the county lines appear. Your address will show up as a star with the county line clearly marked.
