We went to a collection company in March of 06' and the collection company has now taken this case to court. Kensington Realty owed us about $2600 and just simply refused to pay. As the litigation drags on we have found out that the owner - Barry Cooper - is one of "Them". The lawyer knows this company and the man and the six or so other companies that he has started that are doing the same thing to all of their abstractors. So be warned!
We have several other accounts that we will be taking to Wexford & James (http://www.wexfordjames.com/) in hopes of recovering at least part of what is owed. These folks are very easy to work with and really seem to know a lot about our industry and our needs.
Vigilance if our first line of defense and I believe that collection companies could prove to be the second. No money up front is required, and although the collection company takes a chunk of any recovered funds at least we have a resource that allows small companies like ours to go after the bad guys. It is important that we all do it if we hope to make a difference.
Stepping off my soap box now and making more coffee :-)
