Lisa~
When I worked for an attorney at the Outer Banks, she also owed me a substantial amount of money for work I had done for her over a 3-4 month period. She told me that the client was going to pay me directly...even though I did not contact with her client, I contacted the work through her. Eventually after almost a year and with the help of another attorney that I trusted at the time who called her on my behalf, and mostly it was the threat of filing a compliant with the NC Bar that really got things rolling. No matter how trivial the compliant, the Bar will contact the attorney in question and THEY HAVE TO RESPOND. No one wants the Bar breathing down their neck or questioning them or checking up on them. It also sends a red flag to Raleigh that things aren't on the up and up with that attorney and probably not the first time something has been filed against them. It was also interesting that this particular attorney in Kitty Hawk was known that she personally very well off but she had no staff except herself which should have been a red flag to me to begin with..but you live and learn. If you have to file a compliant, realize that you are going to burn that bridge and be ready for that. Good Luck to you because I have been there. If you want to email me outside of this forum, please do so. It's not just company's that stiff abstractors, attorneys can sometimes be worse to deal with.  I try now only to do work with folks I know pretty well and that I have a relationship with so if there is a problem, it can be worked out..but I know that is not always the case. Take care and good luck.
