If you think you had an interesting week, you ought to try to search a title in Abbeville County. When they seceded from the Union, they never got back in. No one, and I mean no one, including the Clerk of Court, has a clue as to how to index. They have never heard of a computer. Still indexing by hand, still copying by hand. You would not believe it!!! You know we have a code section in South Carolina for a reason. Wonder why Clerks of Court don't ever read it. This is what I hear on a daily basis. "But that is the way it has always been done." And I point out that is has always been done wrong. I finally had to send a copy of the code section to the Clerk of Court in Abbeville explaining how to index a deed from the Special Referee. They were just indexing out of the Special Referee. They don't even index assignments or satisfactions. They just write across the face of the mortgage. Did not Court Administration stop this practice about six years ago, because of liability assumed by the Clerk of Court. I could go on forever. Another Code Section that ought to be faxed to every RMC office in South Carolina is 30-9-75, stating that if records are computer, there must be a hard copy back up available for use at all times. It is much easier to find misspelled names in a hard copy index than on a computer. "Garbage in, Garbage out".
