I'm not interested enough in collecting the $84 to waste my time filing a small claims action. It just isn't worth the hassle. Like I said, I know the owner and I can give him a call to straighten it out if I have to. I'm not that worried about it.
More troubling to me is that someone wouldn't realize that the best way to stop getting past-due notices is to pay your bills on-time. How tough is that? If you don't, you should expect a past-due notice.
And, I have gotten them before. I know a few times, my DirecTV bill was sent out on the due date and crossed in the mail with my new bill. When it arrives, its comes in a pink envelope with "past due" stamped on it. "Past due" isn't a derogatory statement, its simply notification of the status of the account. Its just a fact - not a judgment.
