Just saw an interesting post on one of the other boards. Some of the notary signing agents have expressed an interest in process serving as an alternate income during the real estate slump. My firm uses both state marshals and process servers to initiate litigation.
Judging from the bills I receive the work seems to produce a fairly good income for the process server. Their bills generally run between $75 and $100 to simply walk up to a defendant , and serve him with the papers. The marshal /process server then fills out a one page "Return of Service" which is attached to the pleading, and filed with the court. Seems like an easy way to make some money. Possibly the abstractors would wish to consider it.
One word of caution...a number of marshals have told me that they absolutely hate serving eviction notices. The defendants almost always live in bad areas, and they never know what is on the other side of the door when they knock on it...sometimes a vicious dog...other times a loaded gun. However, you as a process server have the right to refuse service of eviction notices.
