Actually, the original feast celebrated by the pilgrims in 1621 was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true observance of giving thanks. That wouldn't come until later years. It's not entirely clear whether or not they had turkey, but most historians agree that they definitely had venizon. According to his journal, Governor William Bradford sent four men "fowling" for wild ducks and geese. The term "turkey" was how the colonists referred to any sort of wild fowl. The feast also included fish, berries, lobster, dried fruit and watercress.
A word of caution, if you're going to attempt deep-frying a turkey, keep a decent-sized fire extinguisher on hand. I've heard a lot of horror stories about people who have set their houses on fire doing this.
