For those of you who are not Connecticut residents...We had a tragic situation here last summer. Two paroled convicts broke into a house in Cheshire, Ct. The husband was at work, but his wife and two daughters were home. The convicts robbed, raped and murdered the wife and daughters. The felons were soon apprehended, and are now awaiting trial. The prosecution is going for the death sentence.
I had the opportunity to talk to someone who works in one of the prisons in which one of the convicts is now incarcerated. She indicated that the one convict needs to be kept separate from the general prison population because the other inmates will not tolerate a sex offender among them.
In response to a public outcry the State has enacted new legislation requiring a mandatory 10 year sentence for those convicted of burglarizing someone's home. The rules for parole have been tightened, and additional corrections officers are being hired to manage the increased prison population anticipated from fewer paroles.
Interestingly, a proposed recidivist statute (Three time loser law) requiring life imprisonment for a third felony conviction was not passed by Connecticut's legislature. Fact is often stranger than fiction sometimes.
